Communications Officer

The Communications Department (COM) is the International Monetary Fund's strategic center for communication. It develops and coordinates the IMF's external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF’s key messages, advises IMF management and staff on how best to convey key messages, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity. The department is based at the IMF's headquarters in Washington, D.C.


The Media Relations Division is responsible for the day-to-day contacts with journalists, drafting of media communications issued on behalf of the Fund, organization of media opportunities and events for management and staff, and for generally promoting public understanding of the Fund.

 

Under the general supervision of the Division Chief and Deputy Division Chief, key responsibilities will include:
 

  • Supporting the goals of the Fund, using standard and innovative journalistic and public relations techniques.
  • Conceptualizing and playing a leading role in promoting the public's understanding of the Fund's operations and activities through the media – including social media channels.
  • Working regularly with media on economic and financial issues.
  • Creating and implementing strategies for media outreach and facilitating media seminars.
  • Monitoring news developments and trends and contributing to media impact analyses associated with high-profile news-generating events, including Management travel and conferences.  
  • Participating in the department's matrix approach to working with other IMF departments on communication issues, which can encompass a broad range of stakeholders.
     

The successful candidate will have:

  • An advanced university degree, or equivalent, in journalism, communications, international relations, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant professional work experience. Alternatively, a university degree, or equivalent, and ten years of relevant professional experience are required.
  • Experience in international journalism or public relations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in digital media and social media.
  • Good knowledge of economic and financial matters, as well as a sound understanding of global economic governance issues.
  • Knowledge of Latin American economic, financial and social issues is desirable.
  • Strong English-language writing and superior analytical and communications skills are essential.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required; Portuguese highly desirable; the knowledge of other languages would be an advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to accommodate heavy workloads.
