Senior Government Relations Representative
The Wilderness Society seeks a highly creative and skilled individual to lead government relations strategies to achieve energy and climate program and defense campaign goals, including defending places too wild to drill, facilitating the country’s transition to clean energy, and ensuring public lands are managed as part of a solution to climate change.
Reporting to the Senior Managing Director for Government Relations and working in coordination with government relations, energy and climate, agency policy and planning, parks and public lands defense, communications, and field staff, the Senior Representative will develop and execute strategies to educate and influence key decision makers in Congress, as well as within the Administration. This person will represent TWS in coalitions, in meetings with decision makers and their staff, and in the media. They also will work to identify and engage new partners to advance organizational priorities. The Senior Representative will develop education and advocacy materials, target lists, talking points and conduct other activities in support of energy and climate program priorities and other public lands defense efforts. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the execution of TWS’s government relations strategies – with Congress and the Administration – to support and defend key policies related to energy development on federal lands and to defend places that are too wild to drill, partnering with field staff, energy policy experts, communicators and other TWS staff. Work closely with TWS energy and climate program staff to develop advocacy strategies to achieve core program goals.
- Track and manage an evolving portfolio of energy and climate-legislation that may impact wildlands or other TWS energy-related objectives. Educate Members of Congress, congressional staff and agency officials on priority energy and public lands issues; support TWS staff and partners by lobbying and working with Congress and the Administration.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with congressional staff. Build TWS’ national partnerships and engage in coalitions with key stakeholders, including partner organizations, public land user groups and elements of the energy industry.
- Work closely with TWS energy and climate program staff and communications staff to ensure effective public messaging and communications on priority energy and climate issues, including serving as an organizational spokesperson as needed.
- Develop fact sheets, talking points and other outreach and advocacy materials; partner with policy and communications staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Competencies, and Education
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience working on policy, political or advocacy campaigns or in a related field.
- Strong experience working with elected officials and a solid understanding of the legislative process and politics at the federal level. Experience working on Capitol Hill a plus.
- Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives—across race and gender.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to translate technical information and explain complex policies succinctly and clearly for a public audience and decision makers. Working knowledge of federal energy and public lands issues a plus.
- Proven ability to develop strategies and tactics to achieve an advocacy goal. Strong problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to function at a high level under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with many simultaneous moving pieces.
- Motivated, self-starter with the ability to take initiative, develop ideas, and see them through to implementation.
- Superb organizational skills combined with the ability to prioritize sometimes conflicting demands and work on multiple issues
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fun and collegial but occasionally stressful atmosphere.
- A solid professional presence, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with many different interests and personalities.
