The Producer/Reporter, working closely with the Managing Producer and Senior Talk Host of The Kojo Nnamdi Show to develop and execute a series of talk show segments, reported feature stories, and live events related to the past, present, and future of the Washington region. The Producer/Reporter is responsible for researching a creative slate of potential stories, topics and venues related to a theme developed around the 20th anniversary of The Kojo Nnamdi Show. The ideal candidate is a capable and imaginative reporter and producer with experience researching, writing, reporting, editing, and producing feature and segments. The Producer/Reporter is also responsible for building and executing a robust and creative digital strategy for the series across multiple digital media platforms. While the Producer/Reporter will be a member of the talk show team, they will also work collaboratively with the regional newsroom, contributing related stories via newscasts, live two-ways, and features, and will work in collaboration with the Marketing team to execute related live events.

The Producer/Reporter is a one year temporary full time position.

Work Environment
  • This position reports directly to the Managing Producer of The Kojo Nnamdi Show and is part of WAMU's Content division
  • This is a position requiring a variety of different skills. First and foremost, the producer must possess clear and accurate knowledge of local news and current events. The producer must possess the judgment to predict which stories will work on the radio and which will have currency as much as a week away. The producer must be capable of doing complex research and writing in order to compile and provide support material for the host. The producer must be able to write in a clear and concise "radio" manner, understanding what works on-air and what doesn't. The producer must have an excellent phone manner, especially when pre-interviewing potential guests for the program and when answering the phones. The producer must be able to formulate clear and insightful answers to questions and provide the answers before the show goes on the air. The producer must be able to work under stress and react to breaking news and unexpected events with calm and clear thinking.

  • Commensurate with experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Degree in journalism or equivalent experience
  • 3-plus years' experience reporting or producing journalism, preferably in broadcast media
  • Top-notch writing, research, and reporting skills, with a distinctive storytelling style
  • Experience and interest in the intersection of editorial and live events
  • Passion for audience engagement and in-person experiences
  • Journalistic agility, or the ability to shift comfortably between producing talk show segments, live events, on-air reporting and online news articles
  • Hands-on audio editing experience
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under constant deadline pressure
  • Experience mining social media platforms for story ideas, angles, and sources, and building online audiences
  • Willingness to try new storytelling methods, and adapt to changing platforms and audience needs
  • Experience with multimedia production, particularly photo and video
  • Ability to establish and maintain friendly and effective working relationships with the rest of the Newsroom and other WAMU employees

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Deep knowledge of the Washington region
  • Experience with 1 or more content management systems (ideally Wordpress)
  • Combination of talk show and radio reporting experience
