Vice President, Communications/Government Relations

Position Summary: This position has governance, oversight and accountability for TVPPA’s communications and government relations functions. Develops strategies and leads the identification, development and implementation of process improvement initiatives for communications, government relations and marketing. Leads the development of an overall TVPPA marketing strategy and coordinates implementation of marketing initiatives with appropriate personnel.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Leads the development and implementation of TVPPA’s communications, government relations, and marketing strategic plans
• Directs all communications with targeted audiences including TVPPA members, legislative and regulatory bodies, TVA, trade allies and the general public
• Responsible for editorial content of publications and for ensuring that communication is consistent with TVPPA’s policies, guidelines and strategic direction
• Directs staff on the production of a bi-monthly printed magazine, a monthly electronic newsletter and other public relations and marketing materials as requested
• Responsible for continuously reviewing all publications and communications to ensure that they meet the ongoing needs of TVPPA and its members
• Serves as senior point of contact and liaison for media inquiries; develops media response and coordinates with senior staff
• Serves as staff liaison to the TVPPA Communications Advisory Group
• Assumes leadership role for specific strategic communication and information campaigns for TVPPA
• Prepares and manages annual budgets for Communications and Government Relations for integration into TVPPA’s total budget and manages finances consistent with budgeted revenues
• Leads TVPPA’s government relations and lobbying efforts in conjunction with TVPPA’s Washington D.C. lobbyist, including assisting in the drafting of position papers and communicating issues to TVPPA members
• Serves as staff liaison to the TVPPA Government Relations Advisory Group and leads the development of TVPPA’s annual resolutions
• Leads TVPPA’s involvement in legislative rallies, including scheduling meetings with congressional staff, developing agendas, coordinating with affiliated organizations and drafting talking points for meetings
• Responsible for overseeing the process of developing, proofing, printing and delivering the TVPPA Membership Directory for both the printed and mobile app versions
• Responsible for overseeing TVPPA’s website, including timely updates of news items, calendar events, job postings and staff updates
• Responsible for overseeing TVPPA’s use of social media as part of its overall communications, marketing and public relations strategy
• Responsible for managing the process for recruiting new Affiliate and Associate memberships and recommending new members to CEO for approval, and leads any necessary follow-up with new members
• Supports Seven States Power Corporation (7SPC) on the development and execution of all communication efforts
• Attends all TVPPA and 7SPC Board of Directors meetings
• Assists senior staff and TVPPA members with drafting speeches, presentations and position papers, as requested
• Develops and facilitates occasional training classes on communications and marketing-related topics

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, business management or related area is required
• At least 10 years’ experience in the communications, government relations or related areas along with progressive supervisory experience is required. A combination of direct subject matter experience, supervisory experience and/or educational credentials may be considered
• Demonstrated ability and experience in public speaking, media relations and communicating with legislative personnel is desired
• Ability to communicate and nuance complex issues to address differing audiences
