Senior Editor

Washington DC

Position Objective

To serve as an anchor contributor to HW residential construction brands, researching, reporting, writing, and producing content.

Scope of Position

The Senior Editor will research, analyze, report and write authoritatively on issues related to the residential design and construction industry. An ideal candidate's strengths will lie in well-reported content, use of digital platforms, organizational and project executional skills, and the ability to cultivate a network of sources. General business know-how and specific industry experience considered a plus.


Major Job Responsibilities and Related Duties:

  • Develop story ideas and proposals, including feature-length stories (1,500-words-plus)
  • Research and write compelling features and news stories on deadline
  • Edit or proofread copy, as needed
  • Develop potential photo/illustration ideas
  • Maintain key digital metrics (i.e. open rate, site visits, page views, uniques)
  • Develop ideas to grow brand presence online
  • Ability to travel several times per year to attend industry events and build relationships with key contacts
  • Work with the Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and the entire content team to develop annual editorial calendar and related schedules for editorial titles
  • Maintain relationships with builders, architects, freelance writers, and photographers
  • Promote content via social media outlets

Qualified Candidates should possess the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in writing and editing, preferably as a publications writer (B2B or daily journalism)
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of real estate markets in general, and the residential sector in particular
  • Financial analysis skills sufficient to understand basic business concepts, performance ratios, and research results
  • Strong time management and project management skills
  • Ability to communicate objectives and goals to staff and senior management
  • Ability to consistently meet or exceed deadlines
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take direction
  • Proficiency using writing, editing, computation, web, and pagination software
