Public Relations Manager

Washington DC

The News Literacy Project (NLP) is looking for a full-time public relations manager who cares deeply about journalism and about news literacy education. There is intense public interest in NLP’s work, and we are experiencing tremendous growth. This is a great opportunity for you to help build an influential platform for an important mission and to have your work be widely seen and appreciated, both by an eager public and by appreciative students and educators across the United States and around the world.

This is a new role at NLP. The ideal candidate will hit the ground running, be unafraid to experiment and have an easygoing nature, a sense of fun and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. This position reports to the senior vice president of communications.

About NLP

Founded in 2008, the News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that empowers educators to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the Checkology® virtual classroom, an online e-learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in 2016, more than 13,600 teachers have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories and 93 other countries.

About the position

The public relations manager will help plan and execute NLP’s communications strategy to raise awareness of our mission and impact, advance fundraising and constituent engagement, and amplify our message across multiple channels. S/he will connect educators, donors, partners and other key constituents to NLP and motivate and inspire them to support us and use our news literacy tools. S/he will work with stakeholders across the organization, including the education, partnership and fundraising teams, to provide strategic guidance, program analysis and recommendations for effective approaches that elevate NLP’s expertise and advance our strategic business goals.

In this job you will:

  • Conceptualize and create compelling content to engage, cultivate and nurture NLP’s key stakeholders and constituents.
  • Build and maintain key media relationships, engage with reporters around newsworthy NLP initiatives, and manage inbound media inquiries.
  • In partnership with NLP staff, write and edit press releases, fact sheets, constituent communications, blog posts, contributed/opinion pieces and other materials.
  • Research potential storytelling opportunities and support the collection of success stories and similar assets.
  • Manage public requests for information and event speakers.
  • Provide media and ambassador training to NLP team members and key stakeholders, including board members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate also will have most or all of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (required).
  • At least three to four years of experience in public relations, journalism or communications.
  • Established track record of generating positive coverage in U.S. national and local media.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mobile, emerging and social media, and advertising campaigns.
  • Deep experience in identifying external trends and capability to turn insights into action.
  • Ability to own the planning, development and implementation of projects.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills a must; ability to “translate” technical language into compelling stories needed.
  • No fear of deadline pressure.
  • Computer skills that include the Microsoft Office suite (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel), social listening platforms and Google Analytics.
