The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is seeking a media relations and marketing associate to join our media relations and marketing team.
This position works directly with the director of media relations and strategic marketing to develop and execute a media strategy to promote AEI scholars and their work. He/she is responsible for pitching news and editorial interviews with AEI experts and promoting story ideas based on AEI research to print reporters and broadcast journalists. Writing responsibilities include drafting and disseminating pitches and press releases and editing op-eds and other commentaries. Other responsibilities include coordinating interviews between AEI scholars and journalists and fielding daily inquiries from the press. He/she promotes AEI scholarship through regular engagement with media including: arranging briefings for reporters on major public policy issues; drafting, editing, and sending out press releases; and contacting media outlets to cover AEI events.
Candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex policy material into clear, lively, and straightforward prose or bullet points. Candidates must have a keen interest in policy and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a frequently busy and demanding environment. Experience with writing on deadline, familiarity with AP style, and two to three years of related work is a must. Candidates must also have the ability to think strategically and plan a comprehensive media outreach. The ideal candidate has existing contacts and relationships among print reporters, national news bureaus, network and cable news outlets, and national radio broadcasts. A bachelor’s degree in history, political science, English, government, communications, or any related field is preferred.
