Director of Communications

Lanham MD


The Mission: The Disabled Veterans National Foundation was founded in 2007 to provide assistance to veterans and their families. DVNF provides direct assistance and collaborates with like-minded organizations in providing services to disabled and in-need veterans and their families. DVNF pays particular attention to under-served veterans, including disabled veterans, women veterans, homeless veterans, and those who suffer invisible wounds such as brain injuries and PTSD. Working on our own and with other organizations, we strive to advance the interests and well-being of in-need veterans and their families.

Summary: The Director of Communications is responsible for managing and directing all DVNF’s internal and external communications. S/he manages all public relations, creates communication strategies, and serves as the key spokesperson and media contact for the organization.

Responsibilities

• Manage/ monitor presence on the internet, publications, blogs
• Work with fundraising team to increase online donations
• Oversee the daily communications operations
• Manage the communications budget
• Track news, people, events, and topics of relevance/interest
• Work in conjunction with consultants/PR to react in a timely manner to the organizations communication needs; help identify effective communication and strategies for targeting key audiences
• Ensure that all materials and communications adhere to organization mission
• Build and maintain relationships with consultants, individuals, staff, Board of Directors, and other veterans’ organizations.
• Increase viewership to DVNF website, social media, etc.
• Monitor/manage social media network for DVNF (twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
• Seek out additional ways to promote DVNF mission to social media fans & beyond
• Work with program department to find innovative ways to communicate and promote programmatic activities• Plan and coordinate all media event needs including scheduling appearances for DVNF CEO/Board of Directors
• Create and maintain reports on Communication department on a
monthly basis to CEO, Deputy Director, Board of Directors, and DVNF staff
• Address donor inquiries that go beyond the general scope
• Assist with additional duties as assigned even beyond the scope of the job description

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Journalism, Communications, or Marketing and non-profit experience preferred;
• Creative
• 4 years of Communications experience
• Proficient in MS word & Excel; knowledge of other software a plus;
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and function as a team member;
• Self-organized, can prioritize and multi task;
• Strong verbal, written, research, editing, and proofreading skills
• Understanding communication principles and best practices
• Sound knowledge of social media & networking (Facebook, twitter, etc.)
• Research and analytical skills

Travel
Some out of area and overnight travel
