The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) is a media advocacy and social justice organization that works towards a media that is fair and inclusive of Latinos. NHMC was established in 1986 and has headquarters in Los Angeles County, California as well as an office in Washington, D.C. NHMC works on policies that impact Latino
communities nationwide.

The Policy Director identifies NHMC’s policy priorities and develops a strategy to advance the organization’s agenda. The director oversees work on tech policy issues, working in coalition with allied organizations, policymakers, and lawmakers. This position reports directly to NHMC's President and CEO.

Duties & Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides tech and media policy advice to CEO, management team, and staff;
  • Provides subject-matter expertise on a range of issues at the intersection of policy and civil rights including expanding digital rights, increasing media diversity, eliminating hate speech, and improving tech platform accountability;
  • Drafts advocacy materials including FCC filings, internal memoranda, policy analysis, blog posts, CEO statements, editorials, social media content, press releases, presentations and other documents that help advance NHMC’s policy work in accessible terms
  • Uses public comments and written advocacy materials to explain the impact of telecommunications policy proposals on underrepresented and marginalized communities;
  • Plans, leads and attends meetings with decision makers at the FCC, Congress, tech companies, and sometimes leads coalition working group meetings and events. Also represents NHMC at public-facing events, speaking engagements, panel discussions, and other media opportunities;
  • Establishes relationships with and inform policymakers, lawmakers, and advocacy groups of the impact that media and telecommunications policies have on Latino populations;
  • Maintains working knowledge of federal agency practices and procedures in addition to legislative protocols;
  • Strengthens the policy and media programs by developing and maintaining relationships with allies, funders, and academic partners who support NHMC’s work;
  • Collaborates with external work with pro bono counsel, and policy fellows;
  • Maintains Washington D.C. and New York contact lists, documents for grant reports, and administrative docs for the NHMC Google drive
  • Generates grant reports documenting NHMC's policy work and achievements and collaborate with events manager to produce the Washington D.C. Impact Awards and New York Impact Awards
  • Provides support to the CEO & President as needed and as it may arise; and other duties as assigned;

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in public policy, law, or related field
  • 2 - 5 years of public policy
  • Deep appreciation for social justice and fair media representation
  • Leadership and collaborating experience
  • Excellent writer with strong communication skills
  • Willingness to travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in public policy, law, or related field
  • Established government contacts
  • Policy experience in the telecommunications and tech industry

Travel: 15 – 20%

Salary Range: $68K - $88K
