Education Specialist (Social Media)

Washington DC

This position is located within the Department of Programs and Audience Development, in the Office of Audience Engagement at the National Museum of American History (NMAH). The purpose of this position is to plan digital outreach initiatives that further the Museum’s mission and goals as it pertains to NMAH’s social media program. Manages and contributes to the publication of the Museum’s blog; and evaluates and reports on digital outreach and other new media initiatives.



  • Leads the interpretive planning for and the development of digital outreach initiatives.

  • Plans and implements social media and other digital outreach campaigns that support the Museum’s audience engagement goals, which include audience development and interaction, education and marketing goals, by broadening access to online audiences and encouraging more deeply engaging digital experiences.

  • Provides editorial oversight for social media and video projects and serves as managing editor and contributing author for the Museum’s blog.

  • Leads a cross-functional oversight and editorial team and manages the content development, review, editing, and publishing process for audience engagement, education, and marketing digital outreach campaigns.

  • Conducts or coordinates the research and evaluation of the Museum’s social media, blog and related digital outreach activities to measure their effectiveness and improve and refine digital outreach strategy.

  • Leverages current and future social media platforms and online tools to increase public awareness and engagement around Museum collections, exhibitions, programs, and research.


You must meet these Basic Education Requirements:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.


Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

In addition to the Basic Requirements above you must have the following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience implementing digital outreach activities for a broad public audience, creating and managing audience engagement, educational and marketing objectives using websites, social media, or similar tools for a museum or cultural institution.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
