Assignments Manager

The Assignments Manager will contribute to make WTOP the leading provider of local, timely and relevant news and information for the Washington, DC metro region. They will oversee the day-to-day planning, coordination and distribution of news assignments to reporters. In addition, they will coordinate and communicate all news coverage with WTOP's broadcast and digital editors. Job Responsibilities - Oversee WTOP's team of reporters
- Assign events and story ideas for WTOP reporters to cover on a daily basis
- Coordinate with reporters on audio, web, social and multimedia elements needed for every story
- Brainstorm and develop assignment/story ideas that impact and reflect the diverse region that WTOP covers
- Lead daily assignments meeting to outline reporter plans for the day
- Make quick decisions on deploying reporters during breaking news. Coordinate breaking news coverage plans with digital and radio producers
- Help ensure accuracy in all WTOP news reports
- Assist news directors in planning and development of series, special reports and WTOP exclusives
- Work closely with Digital News Director to make sure all digital needs are being met for each reporter assignment. Co-lead monthly story brainstorm meeting with Digital News Director
- Monitor local/national news outlets, social media and email to make sure WTOP is on top of the most relevant and breaking news stories of the day
- Monitor and track all news tips and story ideas that are sent to the newsroom
- Monitor daybook for important events and assign reporters accordingly
- Establish and maintain annual editorial calendar. Manage the futures folder/WTOP assignment tool where upcoming events are tracked
- Assist the Managing Editor on weekend coverage planning
- Assist with weekly scheduling, sick calls
- Conduct annual reviews for direct reports
- Create a positive environment that helps team members grow, evolve and reach their goals
Qualifications - Degree in Communication, Journalism, or related field, preferred
- Minimum 3-4 years' experience managing a team in a network or major market newsroom
- News junkie with in-depth knowledge of local D.C. news market
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective communication and relationships with staff
- Ability to multitask, work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to change directions quickly based on news of the day
- Highly organized and able to complete tasks/projects on deadline
- Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor
- Ability to work in compliance with company policies and procedures
- Ability to function in team environment
- Ability to work established schedule and other hours as needed
- Computer and internet literate
