Federal Policy Associate
The Federal Policy Associate assists in the implementation of the federal public policy initiatives and federal policy advocacy for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing to effectively represent the interests of our 3,500 member organizations.
• Conducts research and analysis on public policy issues and prepares written materials (e.g. fact sheets, white papers, etc.) and analyses for publications.
• Tracks legislation and regulations and closely monitors relevant events. Produces information on the implications of government actions for the National Council and our members.
• Represents the National Council’s interests before federal, state or local government and advocacy groups/coalitions. Coordinates with organizations that have similar legislative or regulatory interests. Attends coalition and other external meetings as needed; develops meeting notes and summaries to share with the policy department.
•Contributes to e-newsletters, publications, and social media posts as needed.
• Supports National Council Public Policy Committee, Association Executive Committee, and Addiction Committee activities.
• Assists with National Council Hill Day and NatCon activities, including the production and dissemination of materials and other logistics as needed.
• Assists in the creation of a grassroots network in support of our advocacy efforts.
• Supports advocacy efforts by making Hill appointments and drafting and disseminating support letters, action alert data and other policy communications.
• Takes action to solve problems/issues that routinely arise in areas of assigned responsibility.
• Carries out other duties as assigned.
Occasional travel for work at non-local sites is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in health or public policy, plus 3-5 years’ experience in related field
• Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to contribute to a strong team-based environment
• Ability to operate in a fluid environment requiring multi-tasking to meet deadlines
• Demonstrated organizational skills, and ability to complete tasks as assigned, within timelines
• Strong attention to detail is essential
• Knowledge of office management/administration and systems required
• Preferred: knowledge of Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, mental health and substance use disorder services, and federal legislature/agencies.
